Jong Ajax Coach Criticizes players After extending Winless Streak to Fifteen Games
HELMOND, Netherlands – Jong Ajax suffered a 2-1 defeat to Helmond Sport, marking their fifteenth consecutive match without a victory, prompting coach Willem Weijs to publicly question the commitment of some players.
“In the last twenty minutes we show that this result is unneeded, but what I am most disappointed about is that we switch off in phases when things are not going well,” Weijs told ESPN.”There are a few boys who seem to give up. We can’t use that.”
The team fielded seven different players compared to their previous match against FC Eindhoven, a 1-3 loss. Weijs lamented the ongoing challenges in building consistency. “It constantly seems as if I have to make every excuse, but you never get into a process tactically, not physically and certainly not in terms of team feeling,” he said. “That makes it very difficult to operate as a team.”
Despite the disappointing results, Weijs emphasized the developmental role of Jong Ajax. “We must therefore mainly focus on the development of players, so that thay are ultimately ready for Ajax 1,” he stated. “We have to show winning mentality and poison. This is professional football, in wich you have to sell your skin very dearly. Even if you are not on the field with the same boys every week.”
