Brian Kelly Alleges LSU is Blocking New Coaching Opportunities
BATON ROUGE,LA – Former LSU football coach Brian Kelly claims the university is actively hindering his ability to secure another job, according to a letter from his legal counsel obtained by ESPN.com. Kelly’s lawyers assert LSU’s failure to formally terminate his employment, and unsubstantiated allegations of misconduct, have created notable obstacles in his job search.
The dispute centers around Kelly’s departure from LSU following the 2023 season. While Kelly is no longer coaching the team, LSU has not officially terminated him “without cause,” a distinction critical to the financial terms of his exit. Kelly’s camp argues there is “absolutely no basis” for LSU to claim cause for termination. The ongoing stalemate impacts Kelly’s ability to earn income elsewhere, which would offset the substantial buyout owed to him by the university.
According to the letter, Kelly’s lawyers wrote that LSU’s actions have “made it nearly impractical for Coach Kelly to secure other football-related employment… LSU’s conduct continues to harm Coach Kelly, particularly during this critical hiring period.” LSU appears to be attempting to minimize the buyout amount, reportedly offering Kelly less than his contract stipulates.
Kelly has since filed a lawsuit seeking a judicial declaration confirming his termination was without cause. The situation highlights a contentious separation and raises questions about how future coaches at LSU might be treated, according to observers.
