Terps Launch Players Era Tournament Play Monday Against UNLV
COLLAGE PARK, MD – The Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball team begins a new chapter Monday, opening play in the inaugural Players Era Tournament against UNLV at XFINITY Center. This marks Maryland’s first appearance against the Runnin’ Rebels in nearly four decades.
The matchup carries past weight, recalling a competitive series from the late 1970s and early 1980s defined by legendary coaches Jerry Tarkanian of UNLV and Lefty Driesell of Maryland. The most poignant encounter occurred in the 1985 NCAA Tournament in Long Beach, a game tragically remembered as the final contest for both Terrapin star Len Bias and Coach Driesell. Maryland holds a 1-4 all-time record against UNLV.
Maryland Head Coach Kevin Willard recently achieved his 100th win at Texas A&M with a 77-73 victory over Creighton on November 27th, joining Tennessee’s Rick Barnes as the only head coaches to reach 100+ wins at three power conference schools.
Fans are encouraged to participate in a series of themed promotions throughout the season, including a Red out against Michigan on December 13th, a Pink Out against Purdue on February 1st, a Black Out against Ohio State on February 5th, and a Checker Flag Game against Illinois on March 8th. Details on promotions and ticket deals are available at umterps.com.Maryland is also hosting the “World’s largest White Elephant Party” during a game this season.
