TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – florida State University has retained head football coach Mike Norvell for a seventh season, despite a recent stretch of inconsistent performance, as announced this week. Norvell acknowledged the team’s struggles – ranking in the bottom third nationally in turnover margin (minus-4) and performing poorly in red zone offense – but expressed optimism about the program’s trajectory.
The proclamation included a commitment too “institute fundamental changes in specific areas to improve performance,” though norvell declined to detail those changes when questioned, stating his immediate focus is on the upcoming game against Florida. He also indicated ongoing evaluation of all aspects of the program, including the front office and personnel department, with a more complete review planned for the offseason.
Despite the team’s 3-13 record in ACC play over the past two seasons, and a last regular season road win occurring against Florida in Gainesville in 2023,Norvell highlighted the team’s resilience. He pointed to the team’s ability to defeat Alabama earlier this season as evidence of their potential, stating, “It still ultimately comes down to making the plays in those critical situations that are going to push you to having that success in the game…We’ve done that against realy good teams this year, but we’ve also put ourselves in position to have some production, but not do the things that are necessary to go win the game.”
Norvell identified several young players as key to the program’s future, including Mandrell, Darryll Desir, Ousmane Kromah, Jayvan Boggs, and Micahi Danzy. He asserted the team possesses “really, really good talent,” with several true freshmen demonstrating potential to become “some of the best players in college football here in the next few years.”
Addressing concerns from the fan base regarding his four losing seasons in six years, norvell stated, “I’m not gonna let them down. I believe what it’s gonna be, and I know what we have to continue to do, and we’re gonna get it done.”
