Mayor Cam Guthrie joined community members for a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the completion of the project.
“This new bridge provides an crucial active transportation link across the Speed river for surrounding neighbourhoods, and also the wider community,” said Mayor Guthrie. “By connecting people to the Downtown trail, this bridge provides people with increased access to and from downtown Guelph.”
The 81-meter bridge is part of ongoing upgrades to the Speedvale Avenue East corridor, aimed at improving infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and transit users. Kyle Gibson, Acting General Manager, Engineering and Transportation Services, stated, “The City is excited to deliver this new bridge… We appreciate the community’s support and patience throughout the bridge design and construction process.”
The City of Guelph engaged the community in the bridge’s design process, gathering input through an online survey in October 2023. over 500 responses were received, and the steel girder bridge design submitted by Entuitive and BT Engineering – the community’s preferred choice – was ultimately selected. Construction began in April and was completed by looby Construction.
