Columbus East Basketball Displays Potential, Faces Challenges in Scrimmage Against Roncalli

COLUMBUS, IN – november 23, 2025 -‌ The ‍Columbus East Olympian boys basketball team opened its‍ season Saturday with a five-quarter IHSAA scrimmage against ⁢the Roncalli Royals, revealing both encouraging signs and areas‌ for advancement ahead of WednesdayS regular-season opener. Despite a strong offensive showing from several players, rebounding and finishing around the basket proved to be key areas needing attention.

The scrimmage, held inside the Orange Pit, offered a first look at⁣ the Olympians under game-like conditions. While acknowledging the unique nature of scrimmages – with rotating⁢ lineups⁤ and mandated rules – the contest provided a ‌valuable ⁢assessment ⁤of the team’s current standing. Senior‍ guard Carter Patterson led all scorers with 17 points, demonstrating ⁤his potential as a key offensive force this season. Junior Graham ⁤Preizer also made an‍ immediate ‌impact, contributing 14 points, including four three-pointers, in his first start.

Junior Judah Lewis⁤ added 9 points and showcased a tenacious defensive presence.⁣ Sophomores Logan Neal and Josiah Kiel each‍ scored 3 ⁣points, while ‍Carson Gallion rounded out the scoring with 2.

Though, the Olympians struggled on the boards, especially in the absence of senior Keaton Lawson,a 6’6″ ⁢All-State candidate sidelined with a broken collarbone sustained during football season. Missed box-outs ‌allowed Roncalli to extend possessions,a point Coach Perry Nash is expected to address in practice this week. Despite creating numerous scoring opportunities,East also faced challenges converting close-range shots.

“The sets worked; the finishes didn’t always follow,” a source close ‍to‌ the program noted. “But the⁣ encouraging piece is that the structure is producing‍ those opportunities.”

East will need to quickly address these‌ issues as they prepare to travel to Whiteland on ⁤Wednesday, November 26. Last year, Whiteland split the season series with East, ultimately eliminating⁤ the Olympians in ⁢the sectional title game, adding extra motivation for the upcoming contest.
