Waste Treatment Center in Lleida Faces Indefinite Strike Starting December 29th
Workers at the UTE Center de Tractament de Residus de Lleida, the region’s main waste processing facility, will begin an indefinite strike on december 29th, 2025. The action, unanimously approved by the staff, stems from over a year of stalled negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement focused on securing adequate wages, according to the UGT union representing the employees.
The strike will be a complete work stoppage, impacting waste management services across the entire Lleida district, as the center serves multiple municipalities within the region.
Union representatives report twelve months of negotiations with the company have yielded no progress, citing employer proposals offering what they describe as minimal and insufficient salary increases. Workers argue these proposed increases fail to reflect the current economic climate and are inadequate given existing low wage levels. The UGT emphasizes the increasingly precarious labor situation and deems the company’s current offer “unacceptable,” demanding an agreement that provides a fair salary adjustment and improves overall working conditions.
The UGT is also directing criticism towards both the UTE operating the facility and the Segrià Regional Council, holding both parties ”coresponsible” for the negotiation impasse. The union alleges that the governance, while not directly involved in negotiations, is imposing salary limitations that are hindering progress and effectively trapping workers in an unfavorable position.
UGT is urging both the UTE and the Regional Council to thoroughly review the workers’ proposal and to resume dialog with the goal of reaching a mutually satisfactory agreement. The union warns that the strike, occurring at a critical time, has the potential to considerably disrupt waste management operations throughout the Lleida district.
