Orioles Identified as Potential Landing Spot for Red Sox Free Agent Lucas Giolito
Baltimore, MD – As Lucas Giolito enters free agency following a resurgent season with the Boston Red Sox, the Baltimore Orioles have emerged as a potential suitor, according to a report by Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report. The Orioles, facing a notable overhaul of thier starting rotation, could view the veteran right-hander as a stabilizing force.
Giolito, who underwent an internal brace repair to his right ulnar collateral ligament in 2024, posted an expected ERA of 4.99 last season, suggesting some degree of luck factored into his performance. However, his ability to consistently record outs represents a valuable asset, particularly after struggling to do so in prior years. Notably, his fastball velocity remained consistent with his 2023 levels despite the injury.
Despite risks associated with his injury history – including missing the 2025 postseason with an elbow issue and a reputation for inconsistency – Giolito offers a proven track record as a starting pitcher.
Baltimore is tasked with replacing 329.2 innings lost from the departures of Tomoyuki Sugano, Charlie Morton, and Zach Eflin. The recent trade of Grayson Rodriguez to the Angels for Taylor Ward further emphasizes the need for rotation depth.
“The orioles have 329.2 innings to replace between Tomoyuki Sugano, Charlie Morton and Zach Eflin, and they also flipped Grayson Rodriguez to the Angels for slugger Taylor Ward earlier this week,” Reuter wrote. “Full seasons from Trevor Rogers and kyle Bradish will go a long way after they made a combined 24 starts, so one quality veteran arm to slot somewhere in the No. 2/3 range in their rotation might be all they need. Lucas Giolito reestablished himself as that caliber of starter after a strong campaign in Boston.”
Adding Giolito would provide the Orioles with reliable innings and a solid presence in the middle of their rotation as they rebuild the unit.
