Stop Throwing Away Bananas: Experts Share Tips for Extended Freshness
Bananas are a frequent casualty of food waste, frequently enough discarded as soon as brown spots appear. However, specialists say simple storage adjustments can substantially extend their lifespan – potentially up to two weeks.
The ripening process in bananas is driven by ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone. Avoiding plastic bags, even those with ventilation, is a key first step, as they trap ethylene and accelerate browning.
According to food hygiene experts at High Speed Training, the traditional fruit bowl isn’t ideal for banana storage. Instead, keep bananas at room temperature on the kitchen counter, ensuring they are protected from moisture, direct sunlight, and heat.“Heat greatly accelerates the ripening process. therefore, do not place them near ovens, hobs or other appliances,” they advise.
To further slow ripening, separate individual bananas from the bunch. Ethylene is primarily released from the stem, so dividing the bunch limits the gas’s spread. For even greater effectiveness, wrap the stems tightly with plastic wrap to restrict ethylene release.
Those preferring a less hands-on approach can utilize a banana tree – a stand designed to allow air circulation around the fruit. While refrigerating bananas will darken the peel, it preserves the firmness and freshness of the fruit itself. by employing these techniques, you can dramatically reduce banana waste and enjoy them for much longer.
