Norris Secures Las Vegas Grand Prix Pole in Dramatic, Rain-Soaked Qualifying
Las Vegas, Nevada – Lando Norris claimed pole position for the 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix after a tense and rain-affected qualifying session, narrowly edging out reigning world champion Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. The McLaren driver navigated treacherous track conditions to set a blistering lap time, securing the top spot on the grid for Sunday’s race.
This marks a notable achievement for Norris, his first pole position of the season and a crucial boost as the Formula 1 season nears its conclusion. The qualifying result shakes up the established order, presenting a challenge to Verstappen’s dominance and injecting excitement into the Las Vegas race weekend. With the championship already decided, all eyes are now on the battle for race victory and the final positions in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.
Norris’s final flying lap saw him push to the limit, appearing to go wheel-to-wheel with Daniel Ricciardo’s Racing Bulls at Turn 12. The session concluded with Verstappen in P2 and Sainz rounding out the top three.
The remainder of the top ten consisted of Charles Leclerc, George Russell, Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls), Fernando Alonso, Yuki Tsunoda, alexander Albon, and Pierre Gasly.
“it was stressful, stressful as hell!” said a relieved Norris after securing pole. “I didn’t know no-one else was going to get a lap after me.” He described the slippery conditions, noting, “I knew I felt like the first two sectors were good but it’s so slippery out there. As soon as you hit the kerb a little bit wrong like I did, you snap one way, you lose the car the other way, close to hitting the wall but good enough for P1 today. Not the nicest of conditions but I’m happy it stopped raining and we could get a good Qualifying.”
