Washington Resident Succumbs to H5N5 Avian influenza

A resident of Grays Harbor County, Washington, has died after contracting the H5N5 strain of avian influenza, state health officials confirmed. The individual, described as “older” with pre-existing health conditions, was hospitalized earlier this month in Kings County (Seattle). Symptoms included high fever, confusion, and difficulty breathing.

The patient raised a mixed flock of domestic poultry and health department testing indicates the virus was present in the flock’s surroundings. Exposure to the poultry, their surroundings, or wild birds is considered the most likely source of infection.

This marks the first confirmed human case of H5N5, a strain initially detected in birds and mammals in eastern Canada in 2023. Recent research indicates that some animals infected with H5N5 carry a mutation possibly facilitating easier transmission between mammals.

While the risk to the public remains low, and no other cases have been identified, health officials are actively monitoring individuals who had contact with the patient and their flock. The virus has not shown evidence of person-to-person transmission.

Experts emphasize the ongoing concern surrounding avian influenza viruses, as they have the potential to mutate and become more transmissible or deadly. The H5N1 virus currently circulating in North American dairy cattle, for example, is reportedly only one mutation away from easier human-to-human spread. Each human infection provides an opportunity for the virus to replicate and evolve, potentially acquiring dangerous mutations, especially if co-infection with other flu viruses occurs.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely and emphasize the importance of preventative measures when interacting with poultry and wild birds.
