Butter Prices Slashed Again as Norwegian retailers intensify Price War
norwegian consumers will find butter even cheaper on supermarket shelves as Rema, Extra, and Kiwi engage in a deepening price war.A Rema customer recently discovered butter priced lower than anticipated, sparking further reductions from competitors. Kiwi’s communications manager, Nora Helgesen, confirmed the retailer’s commitment to offering the lowest prices, stating, “Of course! We must be the cheapest.” However, she acknowledged the current situation results in uniform pricing, making all stores “equally cheap.”
This renewed competition follows a pattern of aggressive pricing strategies among Norwegian grocery chains, particularly as the holiday season approaches. last year, stores experienced widespread shortages of butter during December due to high demand for gingerbread baking,a popular Norwegian tradition. The current price cuts aim to prevent similar stock issues and attract customers during a crucial shopping period.Extra’s director of communications, harald Kristiansen, stated they “obviously follow all cuts” made by competitors.
Nettavisen previously reported on a record-breaking price war involving gingerbread spice, with retailers selling five million boxes. The Rema customer who initiated the latest round of price scrutiny expressed satisfaction with the competition, provided it remains “at a reasonable level.” They cited last year’s butter shortages as a cautionary tale, hoping the price war will ensure adequate supply throughout the holiday season.
