Meghan Markle Faces Online Backlash after Confirming She Invited Herself to Paris Fashion Week Show
Paris, France – The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, is facing a wave of online criticism after acknowledging she proactively requested an invitation to Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Valentino show during Paris Fashion Week. The admission came during a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, sparking a flurry of reactions on social media.
The controversy began when Piccioli revealed to The Cut that Markle had reached out directly to attend the event. “Meghan and I met some years ago,and we’ve been texting ever since. She reached out and said she’d love to come to the show. There was no strategy or big orchestration,” he stated. He further explained his desire to keep her attendance a secret, noting, “I didn’t tell anyone she was coming because I wanted it to stay a surprise. In fashion, real surprises are rare, and this one was gorgeous.”
Markle subsequently confirmed the account in her Harper’s Bazaar interview, stating, “I was excited for him [Mr. Piccioli]. I reached out and I said, ‘Happy to come and support you.’ We kept it a secret, and it was really fun.”
The confirmation quickly ignited a social media response, with many users expressing disbelief and criticism. On X (formerly Twitter), one user sarcastically commented, ”The Paris Fashion Week Self-Invitation Confessional, truly the pinnacle of self-awareness… if self-awareness were dead.” Others accused Markle of seeking relevance, with one post reading, “Markle’s clinging to that royal title like a lifeline, desperate 2 stay relevant.” Several users suggested she woudl not have disclosed the details without Piccioli’s initial revelation, with one writing,”If Balenciaga’s lead designer had not revealed it,she wouldn’t have admitted it.”
Despite the criticism, Markle also discussed her approach to balancing her various roles. “I love being able to do both, to play in the sandbox with my kids and to play in the front row at a show,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “I think the moment that you start making all of your personal decisions based on external judgment, then you lose your authenticity.”
