Rosario Central Declared 2025 Champion by Argentine Football Association in Surprise Move

Buenos Aires, Argentina – The Argentine Football Association (AFA) unexpectedly awarded Rosario central the national championship title for 2025, a decision announced just prior to the start of the Clausura final tournament and sparking controversy within Argentine football.

The AFA based the decision on cumulative points from the Apertura and Clausura regular phases. Ángel Di María’s team amassed 66 points across 32 games, finishing four points ahead of Boca Juniors. The association claims the decision was made through a unanimous vote by its Executive Committee and the trophy was presented at the AFA headquarters on Thursday.

However, the move has been met with strong opposition, particularly from Estudiantes de La Plata. The club vehemently denies that any vote took place, issuing a statement declaring, “During the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Argentine Professional League, no vote took place on awarding the title of League Champion 2025.”

argentina traditionally awards two separate league titles annually – the Apertura and Clausura.Estudiantes previously secured the Apertura tournament title. The timing of the AFA’s decision is particularly sensitive as Rosario central is scheduled to face Estudiantes in the knockout stage of the Clausura tournament next weekend.

This unprecedented move raises questions about the AFA’s decision to create a new championship designation based on overall points, rather than the traditional tournament-based system.
