Sixth Cancer Diagnosis Doesn’t Dim Spirit of Turkish Woman who ‘Loves Her Cancers’
Giresun, Turkey – Sema Danışmanz, 60, is facing her sixth cancer diagnosis with unwavering optimism, declaring she has “embraced living with cancers and even loved them.” Diagnosed with sarcoma, a soft tissue cancer, two months ago, Danışmanz has a history of overcoming Hodgkin lymphoma at age 16, followed by cancers of the armpit and breast (requiring a mastectomy at 38), and subsequent removal of her left kidney, gallbladder, and thyroid hormones.
Danışmanz’s remarkable resilience has led her to advocate for a positive mindset during cancer treatment. “I am not sick, I have cancer,” she stated, adding, “I have always used that aspect of cancer… turn it into yourself.” She actively encourages fellow patients to leverage the support and consideration frequently enough afforded to those battling the disease.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding treatment for this latest diagnosis – currently at stage 3, with doctors still determining the best course of action – Danışmanz remains confident.”I survived all of them. I know that I will overcome this,” she affirmed.
Danışmanz channels her experiences into supporting others. She contributes to LÖSAM, a Turkish association providing treatment for sick children, through sales of crafts made in LÖSAM workshops at bazaars, and donates income from her book, “I’m Both Alive and Standing,” wich details her journey. She is scheduled to hold a book signing at the Culture and Fair Directorate in Giresun on Sunday, November 23.
Radiation Oncology Specialist Dr. Eylem Odabaşı confirmed a successful surgical operation but noted radiotherapy is currently not recommended due to potential side effects from previous treatments on the same side of her breast. Danışmanz will be closely monitored with regular follow-up appointments.
