“Merteuil” Cast Steps Back in Time for Paris Premiere, HBO Max Launch
PARIS, November 14 – The Wagram cinema transported audiences to 18th-century France Wednesday night as the cast of HBO Max’s new series, “Merteuil,” debuted the adaptation of “Risky Liaisons.” Stars Diane Kruger, Lucas Bravo, Vincent Lacoste, Anamaria Vartolomei, and Julien de Saint Jean were among those present at the premiere, drawing a crowd of influencers and fellow actors including Mallory Wannecque, Anne Parillaud, Julie de Bona, and Vanessa Guide.
The series, available now on HBO Max, offers a contemporary reimagining of Choderlos de Laclos’ classic novel of seduction and intrigue. The premiere event underscored the enduring appeal of the source material and the cast’s connection to the period drama genre,signaling a potential new wave of interest in historical adaptations. The show’s release comes as streaming platforms increasingly invest in high-production value period pieces to attract and retain subscribers.
Before the screening, cast members shared their personal favorites within the genre. Kruger cited Stephen Frears’ 1988 film adaptation of “Dangerous Liaisons” as a key influence, while Bravo named “Once Upon a Time in America,” Lacoste favored “Game of Thrones,” and Saint Jean pointed to “Versailles.”
Vartolomei highlighted a surprising benefit of modern costume design, explaining that advancements in corset construction allowed her to feel agreeable throughout filming. “We were never stuck in costumes that were too heavy,” she said, noting the evolution of historical garments meant she “never feel caged” on set.
