Retirement Age Hike “Inevitable” as Global Lifespans Increase, Latvian Professor Warns
Riga, Latvia – A rise in the retirement age is increasingly likely, not just in Latvia but across Europe, America, and globally, according to Professor Henrijs kaļķis of the University of Latvia’s Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. Speaking on the TV24 program “Press Club,” Kaļķis cited increasing life expectancy and improved quality of life as key drivers for the potential shift.
The traditional model of working until retirement and than fully withdrawing from active life is rapidly evolving, Kaļķis explained. “People are now looking at a much longer-term vision, considering how they can continue to develop their skills and remain active contributors to society, balancing work with social activities and leisure.”
Kaļķis believes economic pressures will ultimately necessitate an adjustment to current retirement ages. “Given all the economic factors, I think it’s going to be inevitable,” he stated.
He highlighted that individuals are living longer and maintaining their working capabilities for a greater portion of their lives, with many expressing a desire to continue working. Research at a global level supports this trend. However, Kaļķis identified three crucial considerations for triumphant implementation: individual ability and willingness to work, and the acceptance of older workers within the existing workforce.
“Often, these individuals possess invaluable experience that can be passed on through mentorship,” he noted. Kaļķis emphasized the importance of fostering mental, physical, and social well-being to ensure older workers remain valued and contribute positively to the economy.
