Kyiv – The Ukrainian government is facing mounting pressure following revelations of alleged corruption within the energy sector. On Tuesday, the opposition European Solidarity party, led by former President Petro Poroshenko, formally called for the resignation of the entire government during a session of the Ukrainian Parliament.
The call for resignation comes after President Volodymyr Zelensky last week requested the dismissal of two key ministers: svitlana Hryntchouk, the Minister of Energy, and German Galushchenko, the Minister of Justice. Both ministers have publicly denied any wrongdoing.
Parliamentary Impasse
A parliamentary vote on the dismissal of Hryntchouk and Galushchenko was scheduled for Tuesday. Though, Members of Parliament from the European Solidarity party disrupted the proceedings by blocking access to the podium, escalating their demands to include the resignation of the entire cabinet. Ruslan Stefanchuk, the Speaker of the House, afterward suspended the parliamentary session.
Lawmakers from Zelensky’s Servant of the People party have accused the opposition MPs of engaging in parliamentary obstruction.
Public Discontent and International Implications
Ukrainians have been experiencing frequent power outages for over three years amidst the ongoing war. This has fueled public demand for accountability from the political leadership. The corruption allegations come at a critical juncture, raising concerns about the potential reaction from Ukraine’s European allies, upon whose financial and military aid Kyiv heavily relies to sustain it’s war effort.
