Hockey United: NHL Global series Stockholm Creates Lasting Memories
The NHL Global Series 2025 in Stockholm concluded with a split series between the Nashville Predators and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Predators claimed the first game 2-1 in a shutout victory last Friday, while the Penguins responded with a 4-0 win on Sunday at Avicii Arena. Though, the scorelines only tell a fraction of the story of a week focused on bringing the excitement of the NHL closer to European fans and fostering a sense of connection for players with their roots.
Filip Forsberg, Adam Wilsby, and Erik Karlsson all echoed a sentiment of resounding success, describing the week in Sweden as exceeding expectations. Beyond the on-ice competition, the series proved to be a deeply personal and impactful experience.
“Hockey was,of course, number one,” stated Predators forward Forsberg,”but there was so much more going on throughout the week that made it an amazing experience.”
For Forsberg and Wilsby, the opportunity to play in front of family and friends rarely seen outside of summer visits was especially meaningful. “These matches have been the most fun regular season games I’ve played,” Forsberg shared. “We’ve had a great time with the team, and honestly, we’ve eaten so many meatballs we might not look at another one for a while! It’s been special for me and Wilsby, a great trip, and an unforgettable experience.”
Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson highlighted the broader meaning of bringing the NHL to Europe. “From a personal outlook, it’s been fantastic to play here and have my loved ones see me play,” said Karlsson, a veteran of 17 NHL seasons. “But more generally, it’s a good thing. The NHL is primarily in north America, but we have so many players from other countries. To give fans who might not otherwise have the chance to see a game live that opportunity… I remember being an eight-year-old boy and if I’d been given the chance to see a game in person, I would have jumped at it.It would have meant the world to me, so what we’re doing now is very special.”
The series wasn’t without its thrilling moments on the ice. A key highlight came during the first game when, trailing 1-0, the Predators capitalized on an offensive zone draw won by Ryan O’Reilly. Seconds later,Filip Forsberg unleashed a powerful backhand shot that found the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1.
While the hockey itself was the central draw, the NHL Global Series Stockholm demonstrated the power of the sport to connect players with their heritage, provide unforgettable experiences for fans, and strengthen the league’s global reach. The event showcased a hockey world truly united.
