Bucharest – Nicușor Dan, the Mayor of bucharest, revealed he has amassed extensive documentation regarding Călin Georgescu, the figurehead of recent protests, and asserted the existence of stronger evidence supporting claims of Russian interference than previously acknowledged. The statements, made November 17, 2023, come as Georgescu gains visibility as a potential choice to established political forces amid widespread distrust in Romanian state institutions.Dan indicated a detailed examination into Georgescu’s background, specifically highlighting a period of several years spent in Vienna where Georgescu reportedly remained inactive. He emphasized the unusual nature of this extended period of inactivity, suggesting it deviates from the typical trajectory of individuals in comparable positions. While not expressing personal affinity for Georgescu or the protesting groups he leads, Dan acknowledged Georgescu’s success in positioning himself as an alternative due to pervasive public skepticism towards Romania’s governing bodies.
“I collected a lot of material about the Călin Georgescu case,” Dan stated, adding that “the Russian interference is much better documented.” He further explained that many Romanians, lacking faith in the Romanian state and its authorities, are actively seeking alternatives, and Georgescu has effectively presented himself as one. Dan also addressed questions regarding his relationship with the Social democratic party (PSD) and criticisms leveled against Ilie Bolojan in a separate statement.
