Barry Evans Returns to EastEnders for Special Dementia Storyline
After over 21 years, Shaun Williamson is reprising his role as Barry Evans in a special EastEnders episode airing this December. The return is centered around a storyline focusing on Nigel’s intensifying dementia symptoms.
Barry Evans became a memorable character in Walford due to his perceived bad luck, unsuccessful romantic relationships, and a long-standing, unresolved conflict with his step-mother, Pat Evans. This feud stemmed from Pat’s affair with frank Butcher, which Barry believed contributed to his father’s death.
his last appearance on the show in 2004 ended tragically; after marrying Janine Butcher, Barry died after being pushed off a cliff - a fate often linked to his infamous choice of footwear, as he wasn’t wearing slip-on shoes.
In this special episode, Barry appears alongside Pat Evans in The Queen Vic as Nigel’s condition worsens. despite their historically strained relationship, Pat and Barry are shown setting aside their differences to support Nigel during this difficult time.
EastEnders has collaborated with Dementia UK throughout the advancement of Nigel’s storyline.
Shaun Williamson expressed his surprise and excitement about returning, stating: “It was a complete shock getting the call to go back to Albert Square, but so exciting! I have to admit to a few nerves (loads!) when I walked back onto the set of The Queen Victoria, but it was so great to work with old friends and colleagues on such a brilliant episode. Just goes to show, you never know what’s around the corner!”
EastEnders Executive producer, Ben Wadey, added: “I’m delighted to welcome Shaun Williamson back to EastEnders for Nigel’s special episode. Barry Evans was renowned for being one of Walford’s unluckiest residents, most notably for his choice of shoes, and so it was a privilege to welcome him back alongside Pat for these special scenes in The Vic.”
