Ethiopia Marburg Virus Outbreak: Symptoms, Response & Latest Updates

Breaking News: Ethiopia Confirms ​First Outbreak of Marburg Virus‍ Disease

[City, Ethiopia] – Ethiopia has officially confirmed its first outbreak of Marburg virus⁢ disease, a highly hazardous‌ relative of Ebola,⁤ following the identification of nine cases in the southern region of the‍ country. The confirmation came ‍just after the WorldHealth ⁤Association (WHO) reported that Ethiopian ‍health authorities were investigating‌ suspected cases of viral hemorrhagic fever.

The Marburg virus, belonging to the Ebola family Filoviridae (filovirus),​ is described by the US Centers for Disease Control ⁢and Prevention (CDC) as a severe hemorrhagic fever with a high‍ fatality rate. ‍The virus originates in‌ Egyptian fruit bats and spreads between humans ​through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals or⁤ contaminated⁢ materials like clothing and bedding.

Symptoms of Marburg virus‍ disease include fever, rash, and severe bleeding. Currently, ⁤there are no approved vaccines or specific treatments available. Patient care is limited to supportive measures,such as rest and maintaining hydration,according to the ‌CDC.

Ethiopian health officials have isolated infected​ individuals and are providing⁤ treatment. contact tracing efforts are underway to identify and monitor anyone who ⁢may have been exposed to the virus.

the Ethiopian Ministry⁢ of Health has urged‌ the public to ⁤remain‍ calm, follow the guidance of health ‍authorities, and seek immediate medical attention if they experience any symptoms ⁤of the disease.

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus commended the⁢ Ethiopian authorities ⁤for their swift ⁣and⁣ transparent ‍response to the outbreak.”This‌ quick ⁤action demonstrates‍ the seriousness of the country’s commitment to controlling the outbreak quickly,” Tedros stated ⁤in a social media post on Friday.
