Devils Lake attorney Sav Kelly has been appointed to serve as a judge in the Northeast Judicial District, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum announced November 15, 2024. Kelly’s appointment fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Michael J.McTavish, effective December 31, 2024.
Kelly, who joined the Grand Forks herald in August 2022 covering public safety, including regional crime adn the courts system, will preside over cases in Grand Forks, Nelson, Walsh, and Pembina counties. The Northeast Judicial District handles a significant caseload encompassing civil, criminal, and family law matters, impacting residents across the region. Governor Burgum selected Kelly from a list of candidates vetted by the Judicial Nominating Committee. Kelly’s appointment is subject to a retention election following her initial six-year term. She previously practiced law at kelly Law Office in Devils Lake.
