Boston College Defeats massachusetts Hockey, 7-3
AMHERST, Mass. – #18/16 Boston College skated past #12/13 Massachusetts Hockey with a 7-3 victory Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. The Eagles’ offensive surge proved too much for the Minutemen, despite a multi-goal performance from UMass freshmen.
UMass opened the scoring at 10:35 of the first period when Jack Galanek finished a give-and-go from Jack Musa. Less than a minute later,Dean Letourneau tied the game for Boston College at 1-1,redirecting a Luka Radivojevic shot. Before the first intermission, Musa put UMass back in front, 2-1, with a shot under the crossbar assisted by Václav Nestrašil and Francesco Dell’Elce.
Boston College leveled the score early in the second period with a goal from Drew fortescue at 2:16,assisted by Aram Minnetian and Michael Hagens. James Hagens then gave the Eagles their first lead at 12:45, capitalizing on a UMass defensive zone struggle following an icing call, with an assist from Teddy Stiga.
The Eagles extended their lead in the third period with a power-play goal from Ryan Conmy at 44 seconds, set up by James Hagens and Will Moore, and another from Will Vote 49 seconds later, cleaning up a loose puck assisted by Letourneau and Radivojevic.
Daniel Jencko brought the Minutemen within one at 12:29 with a power-play goal, assisted by Galanek and Nestrašil. Though, Boston College responded with an empty-net goal from Brady Berard at 18:05 and a final goal from Will Traeger in the last minute.
Boston College outshot UMass 39-16 and went 1-for-1 on the power play, while the Minutemen were 1-for-4. Jackson Irving made 32 saves for UMass, and Louka Cloutier stopped 13 shots for BC.
“I thought in the first period our puck decisions played into a lot of transition for BC, and that’s what they do well,” said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. “We played into their hands, and I don’t’ think we competed well enough and rebound goals are indicative of that. We needed our power play to give us some more life tonight, especially with goalie out. I think we let BC get flying around tonight and we were a little out of sorts.”
The teams will meet again tomorrow night, Nov. 15, at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
