PITTSBURGH, PA – The Nazareth Golden Flyers began their weekend series against Chatham University with a 5-1 loss Friday evening, hampered by an early deficit and a notable shots disparity.
The Golden Flyers conceded a goal just nine seconds into the contest and, despite a second-period goal from Cameron Bauer, were unable to recover against a persistent Chatham offense. This initial setback in the series highlights the challenges Nazareth faces as they navigate a competitive season, aiming to build momentum and secure wins against united Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) opponents. The teams will quickly regroup for a rematch tomorrow, offering Nazareth an immediate opportunity to adjust and respond.
Chatham established control early, capitalizing on a 2-on-1 opportunity for the game’s opening goal. The first period concluded with Chatham leading 1-0,despite a relatively even shot count of 18-14.
The second period saw the Golden Flyers struggle with penalties, allowing Chatham to extend their lead on a power play midway through the frame.Shortly after, Chatham added another goal on another 2-on-1 rush, increasing their advantage to 3-0.
Nazareth found a spark with two minutes remaining in the second when cameron Bauer unleashed a slapshot from the left circle, assisted by Jason Shafer, to narrow the gap to 3-1. However,Chatham responded in the third period with two additional goals,solidifying their 5-1 victory.
Chatham dominated the shot chart,finishing with a 50-39 advantage.
The Golden Flyers and Cougars will conclude their weekend series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
