Big Splash Waterpark Future in Doubt as Owners Explore Alternatives
Canberra, ACT – The future of Big Splash Waterpark hangs in the balance as owners consider options beyond reopening the popular attraction, potentially leading to a significant change for the site and sparking debate over its long-term use. The park has remained closed since late 2022,and despite previous commitments,a firm reopening date remains elusive.
The uncertainty comes as Attorney-General and Ginninderra MLA Tara Cheyne publicly acknowledged growing community concern over the lack of progress at the site. While Big Splash initially advised the government of a reopening plan, delays have prompted warnings of potential regulatory action, including controlled activity orders or even lease termination. The situation impacts Canberra families seeking local recreational facilities and raises questions about the future of the Belconnen leisure Centre site, which is currently mandated for aquatic and recreational use.
“We’re obviously rapidly approaching mid-November,and I know community consternation is growing, especially given what seems to be a lack of activity or improvement at the site,” Cheyne wrote in a Facebook post.
Under the current lease agreement, the site must operate as ”an aquatic and indoor sports and recreation centre and an unlicensed family restaurant.” Earlier this year, the ACT Legislative Assembly passed a motion, spurred by a Greens-led petition, affirming the site should “be kept as a pool.” Any attempt to deviate from this is expected to face strong opposition.
“I’m sure members change their minds between decisions, but I’m sure many of them won’t,” said Minister for Transport and City Services chris Steel, suggesting limited appetite for altering the site’s designated purpose.
The water slides at Big Splash are reportedly in need of demolition and rebuilding, adding to the complexity and cost of reopening.Access Canberra is monitoring the situation, and the government has indicated it will take action if Big Splash does not reopen within a reasonable timeframe.
