Padres Ownership Exploring Potential Sale
SAN DIEGO, CA – The Seidler family announced Thursday they will explore strategic options for the San Diego Padres, including a potential sale of the franchise. The decision comes after a period of importent growth and success for the team under their stewardship.
“The family has decided to begin a process of evaluating our future with the Padres, including a potential sale of the franchise,” said chairman John Seidler in a released statement. “We will undertake this process with integrity and professionalism in a way that honors Peter’s legacy and love for the Padres and lays the foundation for the franchise’s long-term success.”
The Seidler family initially became part of the Padres’ ownership group in 2012, joining a consortium that purchased the team from John Moores for $800 million. Ron Fowler served as executive chairman from 2012-2020, before Peter Seidler assumed control of the team following the 2020 season. Peter Seidler passed away in November 2023, and his family continued ownership. Following a season with Eric Kutsenda as interim control person, John Seidler was named chairman prior to the 2025 season.
Under the seidler family’s leadership, the padres have experienced unprecedented on-field success, reaching the postseason in four of the last six seasons. The team recently achieved consecutive 90-plus win seasons for the first time in franchise history.
Fan support has also surged, with the Padres setting new attendance records. In 2024, a total of 3,437,201 fans attended 81 home games at Petco Park, including a record 72 sold-out contests.
Despite exploring potential ownership changes, the Padres remain focused on competing for a championship. The statement emphasized a continued commitment to players, employees, fans, and the San Diego community, pledging to dedicate “every resource into winning a World Series championship” in 2026, with new manager Craig Stammen leading the team.
The team has retained BDT & MSD Partners to guide the evaluation process. The Padres stated they will not be providing further comment until the process concludes.
