Lamongan, Indonesia – the Lamongan Regency Health Service (Dinkes) is actively working to bolster protection against diphtheria and tetanus among elementary school children through a targeted immunization campaign launched this week. Health officials are administering Diphtheria-Tetanus (DT) and Tetanus-Diphtheria (Td) vaccines to students across the regency.
This initiative forms part of the National Routine Immunization program, designed to ensure elementary-aged children develop robust immunity against these perhaps life-threatening bacterial infections. Diphtheria and tetanus can cause severe respiratory problems, muscle spasms, and even death, especially in unvaccinated populations.
According to dr. Yany Khoirurakhmawati, representative for Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) at the Lamongan Health Office, DT immunization is specifically for first-grade students to establish early protection. “This immunization is given to grade 1 elementary school students throughout Lamongan Regency,” she stated, noting a current target of 17,443 children, with 2,600 already vaccinated as of mid-November 2025.
The Health Office aims to complete the DT vaccinations by december 2025, ensuring all first-graders are safeguarded.Together, fifth-grade students are receiving Td immunization, targeting 16,326 children, with 1,680 vaccinated to date.
“God willing, before the end of the year all targets can be achieved. We want to ensure that Lamongan children have strong immune systems, especially as they approach their teenage years,” dr. Yany added.
The program underscores the Lamongan Regency GovernmentS commitment to fostering a healthy and resilient young generation, free from the threat of infectious diseases. Parents are encouraged to support the initiative by ensuring their children receive vaccinations according to the scheduled timeline.
