COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland men’s basketball defeated Alcorn State 84-64 on Tuesday, extending their winning streak despite a sloppy offensive performance marked by turnovers. The Terps, coming off a win against Georgetown, restored a 19-point advantage in the second half thanks to scoring from Julian payne, Andre Mills, and Guillermo Del Pino.
Payne continued to score effectively, while 3-pointers from Mills and Del Pino bolstered maryland’s lead. Freshman guard Jamie adams, after initially struggling with his shot, drained back-to-back threes late in the game, pushing Maryland over 60 points – surpassing their total against Georgetown – on his 13th and 14th attempts.
“Being 18 years old and playing in this league is not easy at all,” said Mills, praising adams’ performance. “I’m really impressed with him.”
Alcorn State remained competitive largely due to guard Jameel Morris, who went 9-of-12 from the field and matched Payne with a game-high 22 points.
Maryland struggled with 17 turnovers, a notable portion coming from their big men. nine turnovers were committed by the frontcourt, including four from Payne and three from Elijah Saunders.
The Terps also played without junior guard Myles Rice, who reappeared in a protective boot on his left foot. Rice previously led the team with 19 points against georgetown. His status for Saturday’s game against Marquette remains uncertain.
Guillermo Del Pino, recently removed from the starting lineup, made an impact off the bench, contributing seven points, two assists, and a rebound. He scored on a transition layup, a three-pointer, and a midrange floater.
