Soundgarden Enlist Jim Carrey, Seattle All-Stars at Rock Hall Ceremony

CLEVELAND – Jim Carrey delivered a poignant tribute too Chris Cornell as Soundgarden was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Thursday night,⁣ joining a ⁢lineup of Seattle musical luminaries celebrating the band’s enduring legacy. the ceremony, held at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse,‌ saw Carrey, accompanied by Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, perform a haunting rendition of “black‌ Hole Sun.”

Soundgarden’s induction recognizes the band’s pivotal role ‌in popularizing grunge⁢ music in the early ⁤1990s, alongside contemporaries like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. The‍ band-Cornell, Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd, and Matt Cameron-sold over 30 million albums worldwide and earned seven Grammy Awards. Their innovative blend of heavy metal, punk, and psychedelic rock‍ influenced‌ generations of musicians. The⁢ induction is notably meaningful given⁤ Cornell’s‍ tragic death in 2017, and serves as a lasting testament to his‌ artistry and the band’s ⁤collective impact.

Toni Cornell, Chris’s daughter, performed a moving ⁣cover of “Like a Stone,” inspired by her father’s renditions during his Songbook‌ tour in the early 2010s. “I was always really touched⁣ by just‌ him‍ and his voice, his guitar, and eventually ⁣with a cellist… Everyone can relate that song on so many levels, like ⁢I fell ⁢on black days. We’ve ⁤all been there. So‌ I personally related to that, and‍ I really ‍wanted⁢ to⁣ channel how my ‌dad would have⁤ performed ⁢that song on his own,” she said.

Prior to the performance, Pearl Jam’s Eddie ‌Vedder spoke of the importance of preserving rock music’s ⁢legacy. “Rock and roll is almost a lost art,”⁤ Wilson told reporters. “hard rock bands… the bands we grew up with are not that many roaming the planet anymore, so I’m really happy to see the new ones coming up and still honoring those that ‌left the big dinosaur footprint behind ⁢us.”

Matt Cameron reflected on Cornell’s artistic drive,⁣ stating‍ in a pre-induction interview, “He was always seeking that next phase of his writing career, performing career… Maybe down the line he will get ⁢recognized as a solo ‌artist or [for] Temple of the Dog or something like that as his contribution to music has been absolutely massive.”
