HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison University’s men’s basketball team secured its first win of the season Wednesday, defeating Washington & Lee 78-56 in its home opener at the atlantic Union Bank Centre. the Dukes moved to 1-1 on the year, while Washington & Lee competed in an exhibition game.
JMU controlled the contest through dominant rebounding and paint presence, outscoring the Generals 42-26 in the paint and winning the rebounding battle 44-31. Senior forward Terrence newhof led all scorers with 20 points and eight rebounds, marking his first 20-point game at the Division I level.
the Dukes built a 38-30 lead in the first half, closing with a 7-0 run fueled by Washington & Lee turnovers. JMU extended its advantage in the second half, leading by as many as 13 points after a layup from Eli Wilborn. Washington & Lee was unable to close the gap, with the Dukes maintaining a pleasant lead for the remainder of the game.
McBride contributed 12 points and eight rebounds for james Madison, while Paul Jones III added eight points off the bench, sinking two three-pointers. Connor Amarosi paced Washington & Lee with 14 points, and Colin Ryan added 12.
JMU’s victory improves its all-time record against Washington & Lee to 5-1. Christian Brown recorded two blocks, bringing his season total to nine through two games.
The Dukes will continue their homestand on Sunday, November 9, hosting Coppin State at 1 p.m.The game will be streamed on ESPN+, with Curt Dudley and Kirby Dean providing commentary.
