Dukes Win 70-56 Over Washington & Lee in Season Opener

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison University’s men’s basketball team secured⁢ its ​first ⁢win of the season Wednesday, defeating Washington & Lee‌ 78-56​ in its home opener at the atlantic Union Bank Centre. ⁢the‌ Dukes ⁣moved to 1-1 on the ⁣year,‌ while ​Washington &​ Lee‍ competed in an exhibition‌ game.

JMU controlled the contest through dominant rebounding​ and paint presence, outscoring the Generals 42-26 in the ⁣paint and winning the rebounding battle 44-31. Senior forward ⁣Terrence newhof led all scorers ⁤with 20⁢ points and‍ eight rebounds, marking his first 20-point game at the Division​ I level.

the Dukes ​built a 38-30 lead in the first half,‍ closing with a 7-0 run fueled by Washington & Lee turnovers. ‌JMU extended its advantage⁤ in the second half, leading ‌by as many ⁢as⁤ 13 points after a‌ layup from Eli Wilborn. Washington & Lee was ​unable ‍to close the gap,⁢ with the⁣ Dukes maintaining a ⁢pleasant lead for the remainder of the game.

McBride contributed 12 points​ and eight ​rebounds for james Madison, ⁢while ⁤Paul ‍Jones III added eight points off the bench, ​sinking two⁣ three-pointers. ‌Connor Amarosi ​paced ⁣Washington &‍ Lee with 14 points, and⁤ Colin Ryan added ‍12.

JMU’s victory improves its all-time record against Washington & Lee to ⁤5-1. Christian Brown recorded two blocks, bringing ⁤his‍ season total to nine through two games.

The Dukes ⁤will continue their homestand on Sunday, ‍November ‌9, hosting Coppin State at 1 p.m.The ⁢game will be streamed on ESPN+, with Curt ‌Dudley and Kirby Dean providing commentary.
