Bronny James Reflects on Alley-Oop, Increasing Role with Lakers
LOS ANGELES – Lakers rookie Bronny James discussed a highlight-reel alley-oop dunk from Austin reaves during Sunday’s 130-120 win over the Miami Heat, and his expanding role with the team. James has appeared in each of the Lakers’ last three games, marking the first time he’s played in three consecutive contests since the final three games of the 2023-24 season.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick has increased james’ playing time this season, averaging 11.8 minutes per game compared to 6.7 minutes per game last season. However, this increased opportunity hasn’t yet translated to improved offensive production; his scoring has decreased from 2.3 points per game last season to 1.5 points through six appearances this season.
James is currently shooting 21.4 percent from the field on 2.3 shots per game. He had his best all-around performance of the season on monday, recording five points and six assists in 19 minutes. That performance was second only to his 20 minutes played in the Lakers’ 122-108 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Oct. 27.
With Austin Reaves ruled out for Saturday’s game against the hawks due to a groin injury, and Maxi Kleber questionable with an abdominal injury, James could see extended playing time. Gabe Vincent remains out with a sprained ankle.
The Lakers are currently 7-2, second in the Western Conference, and have won five straight games.
