Romeoville Family Targeted in Immigration Scam as DHS Deportations Surge
A romeoville family is reeling after falling victim to an elaborate immigration scam, just as federal deportations intensify under the Department of Homeland Security’s “operation Midway Blitz.” The family, attempting to secure legal sponsorship for a relative, was defrauded by an individual falsely presenting herself as an attorney. The American Bar Association has confirmed documents used in the scam-an attorney contract and a receipt on ABA letterhead-are forgeries.
This case underscores a growing threat to vulnerable immigrant communities navigating a complex legal system, particularly amid heightened enforcement. DHS’s recent surge in deportations increases the desperation-and therefore vulnerability-of families seeking legal assistance. The scam highlights the urgent need for awareness and caution when seeking immigration counsel, and the potential for exploitation by unscrupulous actors.
The family was pressured to act swiftly, completing financial transactions within a 24-hour timeframe through the alleged attorney, who was also purported to be the sponsor. They soon discovered the deception, but the damage was already done.
The ABA has issued a public alert, warning individuals to be wary of direct solicitations via social media or WhatsApp, and requests for payment through mobile platforms. The association emphasized it generally does not charge for legal services.
The davila family has launched a GoFundMe page to raise funds for legal support and assistance as they work to secure the release of their father, currently in ICE detention. “My prayers are with all the immigrant community and we know in the end we will see the light,” Davila stated.
Individuals seeking legitimate legal assistance are encouraged to consult the Immigration Advocates Network (https://www.immigrationadvocates.org/legaldirectory/) and the American Immigration lawyers Association (https://www.ailalawyer.com/).The ABA’s full alert regarding fraudulent immigration practices can be found here: https://www.americanbar.org/news/abanews/aba-news-archives/2025/08/aba-issues-alert-regarding-fraudulent-immigration-practices/?login.
