Colombia is poised to ‍boast the longest ⁤vehicular tunnel in Latin⁣ America as construction progresses on the New road to the Sea project. The main tunnel, currently under development by⁤ Invías, ​will be a key component of the‍ route connecting Medellín‌ to the Pacific coast.

The ambitious ⁤infrastructure project, fully funded by the Government of Antioquia and the Mayor’s Office of Medellín, aims to dramatically improve connectivity and trade opportunities for the region. ⁤Completion of the entire⁣ project is targeted ⁣for‌ 2027, with the installation of electromechanical systems ‌- including ventilation, lighting, and security equipment – scheduled for ​2026. Currently,work‌ continues on lining the⁢ main tunnel and‌ paving the corridor.

Construction is also underway on a 6.2-kilometer section⁤ (sector 2) featuring twelve bridges and six‌ tunnels, with progress exceeding 60%. Officials anticipate‌ completing two major 250-meter bridges before⁢ December 2026. The New Road to the ⁣Sea is​ envisioned as a vital artery for economic development, facilitating⁤ the transport of goods and people between Medellín and the ⁣Pacific coast, and positioning Colombia as a key ‌player in regional trade.
