Former St.John’s Star Luis Ortiz Waived by Maine Celtics, to Undergo Surgery
The Maine Celtics have waived former St. John’s University standout Luis Ortiz, the team announced Thursday, and Ortiz will undergo surgery for an undisclosed injury. The move comes after Ortiz was waived by the Boston celtics at the end of preseason.
Ortiz signed a two-way contract with the Utah Jazz in June after going undrafted, and was afterward traded to Boston in August as part of a deal that sent Georges Niang and two second-round draft picks to the Jazz. He filled one of the Celtics’ three two-way slots.
Though sidelined by a knee injury, Ortiz participated in the Celtics’ training camp and appeared in three preseason games, scoring 6 points in 8 minutes of action. The Celtics later signed Ron Harper Jr.to their final two-way contract, alongside rookies Max Shulga and Amari Williams.
Ortiz previously missed time due to a groin injury during his senior season at st. John’s and sat out Summer League action with the Jazz due to a knee injury.
The Maine Celtics’ roster now consists of 13 players, including Aaron Scott, Hayden Gray, Kendall Brown, Jalen Bridges, Kameron Warrens, Hason Ward, Ron Harper Jr., Max Shulga, and Amari Williams. Omar El-Sheikh, vance Jackson, and Nicolas Timberlake were also waived by the team. The Maine celtics begin their season Friday against the Greensboro Swarm.
