Woman Recounts Ordeal Following Emergency Ovarian Removal at Auch Hospital,Cites Treatment Delays
Auch,Gers – A woman from the Gers department is speaking out about what she describes as a harrowing experience following emergency surgery for ovarian removal at the Auch hospital, alleging significant delays in treatment and a lack of follow-up care. Nathalie, who also is being treated for breast cancer, says the delays may have resulted in the unnecessary removal of her ovary and continues to experience pain and bleeding weeks after the procedure.
Nathalie’s case highlights growing concerns about strain on the French healthcare system, particularly in emergency departments facing staff shortages. Her story, shared with La Dépêche, details a lengthy wait for critical gynecological care, inadequate pain management, and a lack of dialog regarding her post-operative condition. The incident underscores a broader issue of resource allocation and its potential impact on patient outcomes, as recently reported regarding organizational challenges at the Auch emergency department.
According to Nathalie, she arrived at the hospital’s emergency room at 1 p.m. and was told she needed to be seen urgently by a gynecologist at 2 p.m. Though, she wasn’t examined until 8:30 p.m., and was discharged by 9 p.m. Despite experiencing extreme pain, surgery wasn’t performed until the following day. “I spent the day screaming in pain. Even the morphine no longer worked. The anesthesiologist told me that I had been given the treatment in reverse,” she recounts.
nathalie also alleges issues with basic care, stating, “I was still losing a lot of blood, with clots, but they told me that as long as it wasn’t continuous, it wasn’t worrying.” She further claims she was sent home without a prescription or adequate supplies for wound care. “The nurse didn’t even have enough to make the dressings. She had to call the hospital, but no one sent her the right documents. Even today, we haven’t received anything.”
She believes a more timely intervention could have saved her ovary. “Maybe we could have saved him if I had had surgery the day before.” Currently, Nathalie reports continued blood loss, kidney pain, and difficulty contacting the hospital.
Despite her ordeal, Nathalie emphasizes she is not seeking legal action and understands the pressures facing medical professionals. “I’m not looking to cause a scandal. I just want the hospital to become aware of the problem,” she stated. She has sent emails to the hospital and anesthesia department detailing her experience but has yet to receive a response.
