metro Credit Union Receives Top Honors for Member Service
BOSTON, MA – November 8, 2023 – metro Credit Union, Massachusetts’ largest state-chartered credit union, has been awarded a Gold Medal in the Banker & trade publication’s annual ranking of credit unions, recognizing its exceptional commitment too member service and financial growth. The distinction underscores Metro‘s continued leadership within the financial services sector and its dedication to serving the Massachusetts community.
Founded in 1926, Metro Credit Union has experienced substantial expansion under the guidance of President and CEO Robert Cashman, growing from $316 million in assets in 1998 to over $3.4 billion currently. This achievement reflects not only sound financial management but also a sustained focus on member needs and community involvement. The Gold Medal signifies Metro’s position among the highest-performing credit unions nationally, impacting over 200,000 members across the state.
Cashman’s career with Metro began in 1983, immediately following his graduation from Boston University’s School of Management. He progressed through multiple departments, including marketing and lending, before being appointed executive Vice President in 1995 and CEO in 1998.His leadership extends beyond Metro, with active participation in industry organizations at both the state and national levels.
Currently, Mr. Cashman serves on the Board of the National Credit Union Foundation, where he also holds the position of Treasurer. He is a former Board Member of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), representing over 5,000 credit unions nationwide, and remains a member of the New England Automated Clearinghouse Association’s (NEACH) Board. He has also contributed to the Cooperative credit Union Association and Massachusetts Credit Union League, serving on numerous committees including Legislative, Political Action, and Audit.
Beyond his professional commitments, Mr.Cashman is actively involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, demonstrating a dedication to civic engagement and community support. Metro Credit Union’s Gold Medal award reinforces its commitment to financial excellence and its role as a vital financial partner for individuals and families throughout Massachusetts.
