Kearney, Neb. – A first-half goal proved to be the difference Sunday as the Northeastern State riverhawks defeated the University of Nebraska at Kearney Lopers 1-0 on Senior Day. The Lopers recognized their eight-member senior class prior to the contest.
The loss concluded the regular season for UNK, finishing with an overall record of 6-11-3 and a 3-8-2 mark in MIAA play.Despite the setback, Head Coach Chloe Breton highlighted the significant progress the program has made during the tenure of this senior class, recalling a challenging 0-15-3 freshman season that culminated in an 8-6-5 campaign and a playoff appearance last year.
Early in the second half, UNK nearly equalized when junior Chloe Edmunds’ shot sailed just over the crossbar, resulting in a goal kick for Northeastern State. Prior to the break, Loper junior Jordan Renard registered a shot on goal.
“This is a lot of our season. It’s absolutely frustrating the outcome isn’t what we want but we have to understand and appreciate the process and progress,” Breton said. “This year, the chances have been created but we just can’t get them to fall. At the end of the day,I gave them credit for being in the right spot at the right time.Couple inches hear and there…it’s a wholly different season for us.”
Northeastern State (3-11-2, 1-8-2) later tied Rogers State 1-1 on Sunday.
