Greenwich Teen Fencer Strikes Gold Five Times at South American Championships
GREENWICH, CT – Greenwich resident Marcus Pinto has returned from the Fencing South American Championships with a stunning five gold medals, solidifying his place as a rising star in the sport. Pinto, who competes with the sabre, achieved the victories representing Brazil, a nation his family strategically chose to support through his athletic pursuits.
Pinto began competing in Brazil in November 2021 and now participates in approximately six tournaments there annually, a schedule encouraged by Morehouse College fencing coach, Morehouse. While enjoying the welcoming atmosphere of the Brazilian people and its gorgeous beaches, Pinto has also found a unique competitive landscape.
“Everyone looks out for each other a lot more” in the Brazilian fencing scene, Pinto noted, contrasting it with the more individualistic approach common among American fencers. This sense of community, coupled with the faster pace of bouts in Brazil – a difference he adapted to – contributed to his success at the championships.
Pinto’s mother, Bibiana Pinto, explained the family’s decision to focus on competing in Brazil. “We decided as a family to use fencing to give back to the Brazil community,” she said. Each South American contry can send up to six fencers to the championships.
Beyond the medals, Pinto emphasized the importance of enjoying the process. “The biggest thing to find success in the sport is to just have fun and go with the flow,” he said. “Trying to force results…simply doesn’t work.”
For Pinto, fencing isn’t just a competition; “This is my entire life, this sport,” he affirmed. His recent achievements underscore a dedication that continues to propel him forward in the world of fencing.
