Virus Outbreak Claims Lives of 24 Cats at Filey Rescue Center
FILEY, NORTH YORKSHIRE – A devastating outbreak of a contagious virus has swept through Filey Cat Rescue, resulting in the heartbreaking loss of 24 feline lives. The small, volunteer-run organization is now facing a critical financial challenge as it races to vaccinate its remaining cats and prevent further fatalities.
The rescue centre, which relies entirely on public donations, typically spreads the cost of vaccinations by administering them to cats shortly before they are rehomed. Though, the scale of this recent outbreak has forced them to implement an immediate and thorough vaccination program, a critically important financial undertaking.
“We run a rescue all on donations, so obviously there’s a financial implication,” explained Mark Lewis, husband of Tina Lewis, who tirelessly dedicates herself to the rescue. “Sometimes we’ll be taking in rescues of 20 to 30 cats from one location and it’s very tough then to justify spending £100 per cat vaccination when we haven’t got that amount of income.”
The emotional toll on the volunteers, particularly Tina, has been immense. “It’s obviously physically draining, but I think it’s more mentally and emotionally draining, especially for Tina as she’s worked with them tirelessly every minute, every day and had to deal with the fatalities that we’ve sadly experienced,” Mr. Lewis added.
Filey Cat Rescue is appealing to the public for urgent donations to cover the cost of the vaccinations and continue providing care for the vulnerable animals in their charge. every penny received goes directly towards the wellbeing of the cats.
“Every penny goes to the cats, the volunteers we have do it entirely for the benefit of the cats,” Mr. lewis emphasized. The rescue centre’s dedication to feline welfare, despite limited resources, underscores the vital role these organizations play in animal care.
