Don’t Lose Your Dental Benefit: Scaling Coverage Expires December 31st
SEOUL, October 31, 2025 – adults aged 19 and over who haven’t received a scaling procedure - professional tartar removal - this year are urged to schedule an appointment with their dentist before December 31st to utilize their annual health insurance benefit.
Scaling, covered by health insurance once per year, is a crucial preventative measure against periodontal disease and tooth loss.Teh benefit is non-transferable and will not roll over into the next year.
The Korean Dental Association emphasized the importance of regular tartar removal, stating that it prevents gingivitis, periodontitis (“gum disease”), and cavities.Tartar buildup cannot be effectively removed by brushing or flossing alone.
Currently, approximately 70% of Korean adults are not taking advantage of their insured scaling benefit. Scaling rates vary by age group: 33.3% for those in their 20s, 32.7% for those in their 30s,31.2% for those in their 40s,34.8% for those in their 50s, 36.1% for those in their 60s, 29.3% for those in their 70s, and only 13.5% for those over 80.
“Scaling has health insurance benefits once a year, so it is less of a financial burden, and if it is done regularly, it can effectively prevent periodontal disease,” explained Hwang Woo-jin, public relations director of the Dental Association.”As tartar is tough to remove with toothbrushing alone, it is better to consistently manage it with scaling.”
Periodontal disease frequently enough progresses without noticeable symptoms, making regular scaling even more vital for maintaining oral health.
