Dental Hygienist Convicted in Galicia for Working Without Approval

Galician Court Convicts Dental Hygienist of Illegal Practice

Vigo, Spain – A court in Pontevedra, Spain,‌ has upheld a conviction against an individual practicing as a dental hygienist‍ without the required Spanish qualifications, the Professional Association of Dental‍ Hygienists ⁤of galicia (Colexio) announced today. The Provincial court on October 23rd confirmed ‍the sentence originally issued by the ⁣Criminal Court ⁢No. 3 of Vigo.

the defendant, who holds a Dental Surgeon degree from Mexico, was sentenced to six months in prison and ordered to pay procedural ‍costs after being found guilty of professional⁢ intrusion. The court determined that the‌ foreign⁤ degree, lacking Spanish homologation, did⁣ not authorize‍ her to perform‍ the duties of‍ a Dental Hygienist in galicia.

“Through the aforementioned Sentence, the Court has confirmed‍ the existence ⁤of a crime ‌of ‍professional intrusion for which ‍the accused had been convicted,” stated the⁣ colexio, which brought the‍ complaint. Thay⁣ emphasized, “the pending approval does not confer authorization to carry out ‍the functions reserved for the profession of Dental Hygienist.”

The Colexio further asserted, “The fact of having a foreign qualification‍ without homologation is ‍equivalent to ⁤not having any‍ qualification at all.”

This case highlights a growing issue in Spain: qualified immigrants facing lengthy bureaucratic delays ⁣in⁢ having their‍ credentials recognized. While the integration of foreign-trained healthcare professionals could help address shortages in the Spanish medical⁣ system, the slow processing of applications is reportedly⁢ fueling the rise‍ of document forgery rings.
