Secret ‘Ghost of Tsushima‘ Card Revealed as Sucker Punch Details Role in Magic: The Gathering Crossover
october 26, 2023 – A new card featuring jin sakai, the Ghost of Tsushima, has been revealed ahead of the October 27 launch of Magic: The Gathering’s Secret Lair x PlayStation Superdrop. Sucker Punch Productions, the studio behind Ghost of Tsushima, collaborated with Wizards of the coast (WOTC) on the card’s design, ensuring it accurately reflects the game’s protagonist and themes.
The collaboration extends beyond Ghost of Tsushima, encompassing cards inspired by God of War, Horizon Forbidden West, and The Last of Us. The PlayStation-themed set represents a unique crossover for Magic: The Gathering, bringing iconic characters and worlds into the collectible card game.
According to Annie Sardelis, the designer behind the set, creating cards for The Last of Us presented the biggest challenge. “The hardest challenge I signed myself up for are the four “Survivors” Partners from The Last of Us series,” she explained. “I thought it was crucial to represent all the playable characters in the story, but I also wanted your Commander games to feature the infected. It was tricky to find out how to generate the Fungus Zombie tokens on characters that canonically fight against them!”
Sardelis devised a system allowing players to create infected tokens with characters like Ellie, Brick Master, and Abby, utilizing riffs on cards like “Hunted Dragon” to build a token/sacrifice strategy.
WOTC Senior Product Designer Steve Sunu highlighted the quality of the designs, particularly those for Aloy and Jin Sakai. “Annie Sardelis really hit it out of the park for all these designs,” Sunu said. “Aloy and Jin specifically feel like the designs were created just for a player like me. Annie’s an incredible designer, and we were so lucky to have her lend her talent to these new-to-Magic designs.”
The magic: The Gathering’s Secret Lair x PlayStation Drop launches on October 27 at 9 AM PT at the official Secret Lair website.
