Collingwood‘s Centra Suffers Season-Ending Injury
Melbourne, Australia – Collingwood Football Club has confirmed that rising star Ash Centra will miss the remainder of the AFL season due to a knee injury sustained during training this week. The news comes as a notable blow to the Magpies and a dramatic turn for the No. 1 overall pick from the 2023 draft.
Centra, 18, quickly became a fan favourite and a key component of Collingwood’s midfield, demonstrating exceptional skill and composure beyond his years. His absence leaves a void in the team’s lineup as they push towards the finals series.
The injury occurred during a routine training drill, with initial assessments indicating a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).Further scans have confirmed the severity of the damage, requiring reconstructive surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation period.
“It’s devastating news for Ash, and for the club,” said Collingwood coach Craig McRae in a statement. “He’s a fantastic young man with a shining future, and we’ll be providing him with all the support he needs throughout his recovery.”
Centra’s meteoric rise to prominence followed in the footsteps of his family. His sister, Carlton AFLW star Yasmin Duursma, has spoken of the family’s strong sporting background, noting their upbringing included both competitive football and extensive dance training. Duursma and siblings Xavier and Zane are also currently on AFL/W lists. Her brother Willem Duursma was the favourite to be the No.1 draft pick in the upcoming draft.
“He’s gone through enough watching all of us experience the draft process, so I’m very glad that he’s finally getting to go through it,” Duursma said of Willem.
The injury to Centra significantly impacts Collingwood’s premiership aspirations and raises questions about their midfield depth for the remainder of the season. The club is expected to announce a replacement in the coming days.
