UKHSA issues ‘stay at home’ warning over ‘unpleasant’ winter virus – 6 symptoms to look out for

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

The UK ‍Health⁣ Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a ⁣warning urging people experiencing symptoms⁢ of ‍a highly contagious winter virus to stay home, as ‍cases surge across the contry. ‍The virus, commonly ⁣known as norovirus, causes unpleasant ‍symptoms⁢ including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea.

Norovirus is circulating at higher levels than usual‍ for ⁣this time of year, prompting the UKHSA to advise anyone ⁤feeling unwell wiht symptoms to‌ avoid visiting healthcare facilities or vulnerable ⁣individuals. While typically mild ⁤and resolving ‍within ⁤a⁣ few days, the virus can lead to severe ⁣dehydration, particularly in ⁤young children, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems.

The ⁤UKHSA ⁤identified six key symptoms ‌to⁣ watch for: feeling ⁤sick (nausea), vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, a slight fever, and aching limbs. These‍ symptoms can ‍appear suddenly ‍and spread rapidly through close contact⁤ with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces.

Typically, ‍those infected with norovirus recover within two to three days. Though, the NHS advises seeking medical attention via NHS 111 if ⁤diarrhoea persists for more⁤ than seven days or vomiting continues for over two ⁣days, especially ⁤in‍ vulnerable ⁤individuals.

Good hygiene practices are crucial in preventing the spread of norovirus. The UKHSA recommends frequent and thorough handwashing with soap and water, particularly after using the ⁤toilet and before preparing food. Disinfecting surfaces and washing laundry thoroughly can⁤ also⁣ help ⁣limit transmission.

Norovirus⁢ outbreaks⁣ are common during winter months and ⁤can considerably impact schools, hospitals, and care homes. The UKHSA’s warning aims to minimize disruption and protect the most vulnerable members of the community.
