The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a warning urging people experiencing symptoms of a highly contagious winter virus to stay home, as cases surge across the contry. The virus, commonly known as norovirus, causes unpleasant symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
Norovirus is circulating at higher levels than usual for this time of year, prompting the UKHSA to advise anyone feeling unwell wiht symptoms to avoid visiting healthcare facilities or vulnerable individuals. While typically mild and resolving within a few days, the virus can lead to severe dehydration, particularly in young children, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems.
The UKHSA identified six key symptoms to watch for: feeling sick (nausea), vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, a slight fever, and aching limbs. These symptoms can appear suddenly and spread rapidly through close contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces.
Typically, those infected with norovirus recover within two to three days. Though, the NHS advises seeking medical attention via NHS 111 if diarrhoea persists for more than seven days or vomiting continues for over two days, especially in vulnerable individuals.
Good hygiene practices are crucial in preventing the spread of norovirus. The UKHSA recommends frequent and thorough handwashing with soap and water, particularly after using the toilet and before preparing food. Disinfecting surfaces and washing laundry thoroughly can also help limit transmission.
Norovirus outbreaks are common during winter months and can considerably impact schools, hospitals, and care homes. The UKHSA’s warning aims to minimize disruption and protect the most vulnerable members of the community.
