“He was a fantastic, brilliant musical genius,”
The Rise of Soft cell
Ball and Almond formed Soft Cell in 1979, quickly becoming pioneers of the burgeoning synth-pop movement. Their breakthrough came in 1981 with the iconic track “Tainted Love,” a reimagining of Gloria Jones’ 1964 song that became a defining anthem of the era.
While “tainted Love” remained their most notable commercial success, Soft Cell’s influence extended far beyond a single hit. They are widely recognized as a key precursor to acts like the Pet Shop Boys, Eurythmics, and Yazoo, shaping the sound of 80s electronic music and beyond.
A Legacy Continued
The duo disbanded in 1984 but reunited in the early 2000s,continuing to perform and explore new creative avenues. Almond shared the poignant news that Soft Cell had recently completed work on a new album, titled “Danceteria.”
“It’s so sad that 2026 would be such a positive year for him, but I’m heartened by the fact that he had heard the finished record and thought it was really good,”
