Illinois Gubernatorial Candidate Darren Bailey’s Family Killed in Montana Helicopter Crash
Ekalaka, Montana – four members of Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey’s family were killed wednesday in a helicopter crash in Ekalaka, Montana, his campaign announced. Among the victims were Bailey’s son, Zachary, his daughter-in-law, Kelsey, and two of their children.
The deceased grandchildren were identified as Vada Rose Bailey, 12, and samuel Bailey, 7. The couple also leaves behind a 10-year-old son who did not travel on the aircraft. Bailey and his wife, Cindy, are “heartbroken by this unimaginable loss” and have requested privacy, according to a campaign statement.
“They are finding comfort in their faith, their family, and the prayers of so many who love and care for them,” the statement continued.
Bailey, a grain farmer from southern Illinois, is currently running for governor in 2024. he previously sought the state’s highest office in 2022, losing to incumbent Democrat JB pritzker after a campaign marked by important financial investment from both sides. During that 2022 run,Bailey received an endorsement from Donald Trump after appearing at a campaign rally with the former president.
Prior to his gubernatorial bids, Bailey served in both the Illinois House and Senate, representing parts of southern Illinois. He also made an unsuccessful run for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2024.
Governor Pritzker released a statement expressing his devastation. ”Our prayers and deep condolences are with the Baileys in this time of grief,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “may the memories of their loved ones be a blessing.”
