Dentists Report Emerging Dental Issues in Patients Using Ozempic and Wegovy
A growing number of dental professionals are observing a concerning trend: oral health problems appearing in patients taking GLP-1 receptor agonist medications like Ozempic and Wegovy. this has led to discussions about a potential, previously unlisted side effect of these drugs impacting the mouth.
The issue, informally dubbed “Ozempic teeth” by some dentists, manifests as dental damage possibly linked to the medications’ effects on the body. Dr. Rajpal Anjali explains the core of the problem lies in how semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, can affect saliva production and overall hydration.
Experts note that the initial stage of this concern is frequently enough dry mouth, a known side effect of semaglutide as it can interfere with salivary gland function. Saliva plays a crucial role in maintaining oral health by neutralizing acids, removing bacteria, and safeguarding tooth enamel. A reduction in saliva leaves the mouth more susceptible to cavities, gum disease, and enamel erosion.
Compounding this issue, many individuals using Ozempic or Wegovy report a decreased sense of thirst and consequently, reduced water intake. This combination of diminished saliva and inadequate hydration creates an environment conducive to dental problems.
Dr. Anjali clarifies that while “most users tolerate GLP-1 medications without meaningful oral health issues,” a portion experience side effects like dry mouth, nausea, or vomiting that can indirectly harm teeth and gums. Specifically, acid reflux or vomiting can expose teeth to stomach acid, accelerating enamel wear and potentially leading to sensitivity, gum irritation, receding gums, and delayed healing following dental procedures.
A particularly worrying aspect of this side effect is the potential for irreversible dental damage, even after discontinuing the medication. Dentists, including Dr.Anjali, are emphasizing the importance of awareness among both patients and healthcare providers to address these risks proactively.
To mitigate the potential for dental complications while using Ozempic or Wegovy, several preventative measures are recommended:
* Prioritize hydration: drink water consistently throughout the day, even without feeling thirsty, to counteract the dry-mouth effect.
* Stimulate saliva with sugar-free gum: chewing sugar-free gum encourages saliva production, protecting enamel and maintaining a balanced oral pH.
* Rinse after nausea or vomiting: Neutralize acid exposure by rinsing with water or a fluoride mouthwash instantly following episodes of nausea or vomiting, before brushing.
* Utilize fluoride products: regularly use fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash to strengthen enamel and prevent cavities.
* Inform your dentist: Disclose your use of Ozempic or Wegovy to your dentist to allow for monitoring of potential enamel erosion, gum irritation, or other related changes.
Dr. Anjali also suggests that dentists proactively inquire about GLP-1 medication use during patient appointments and consider scheduling more frequent follow-ups, particularly within the first few months of treatment, to ensure early detection and intervention. By prioritizing oral care and regular dental checkups, patients can potentially minimize long-term damage while still benefiting from these medications.
