A Call for Independent Voices on the Board of Education
Editor’s note: following is an opinion submitted by Westporter Camilo riano.
The upcoming Board of Education election presents a crucial possibility to reshape the direction of our schools. Recent history demonstrates a concerning pattern of partisan control, beginning two years ago when a Democratic majority was secured with the support of a write-in candidate who campaigned as independent. this action altered the established tradition of simple majorities on Westport boards and resulted in the loss of a Republican seat previously held by jamie Fitzgerald, effectively diminishing portrayal for over 2,500 residents.
As then, concerns have grown regarding academic performance, transparency in decision-making,and the handling of critical issues like support for Special Education families. these issues highlight the potential consequences of a board operating without diverse perspectives and open dialog.
The fundamental difference in candidate selection between the parties is stark. While some prioritize experiance and qualifications, others appear to prioritize strict party loyalty. this can lead to a lack of independent thoght and a reluctance to challenge the prevailing party line. In over four years of observing Board proceedings, instances of Democrats dissenting on significant issues have been notably absent, with votes consistently aligning along party lines.
It’s time for a change. A Board of Education comprised of independent thinkers, committed to the best interests of all Westport students, is essential.
That’s why I, along with many others, am voting for Hordon, Hopson, Frankel, and Zucaro. These candidates offer the experience, character, and – crucially – the independence needed to address the challenges facing our schools.
Though, this isn’t about party affiliation. Whether you are a Republican, Democrat, Independent, or unaffiliated voter, supporting all four of these candidates is a vote for a more responsive, transparent, and effective Board of Education. It’s a vote for prioritizing the needs of our children and ensuring a brighter future for westport’s schools. Voting for all four is the right thing to do.
