Sheffield Crown Court Names Mohammed umar Khan, 15, as Killer of Harvey Willgoose
Sheffield Crown Court today named mohammed Umar Khan, 15, as the perpetrator in the death of schoolboy Harvey Willgoose. The judge, the Honourable Mrs Justice Ellenbogen, lifted reporting restrictions previously in place due to Khan’s age, citing public interest concerns following a submission by BBC News and other media organizations. Khan previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is to be sentenced later today.
Reporting restrictions initially prevented the identification of the defendant under Section 45 of the Youth Justice and Criminal evidence Act 1999, which allows criminal courts to grant anonymity to juvenile defendants. These restrictions typically prevent publication of the defendant’s name, address, school, employment, or any identifying images. However, the judge had previously agreed to a limited variation allowing reporting that Khan attended All Saints Catholic High school.
BBC News argued for the complete lifting of the order, asserting the community and wider public have a strong interest in knowing the identity of the individual responsible for the serious crime committed at a local school. The judge considered submissions from BBC News and defense barristers before reaching her decision.
The general principle is that court proceedings should be public, but judges can impose restrictions to protect victims or young people involved in cases. This case highlights the tension between protecting the anonymity of juvenile offenders and the public’s right to know.
